GAMANI - A great film

Gamani - Sarath Weerasekera's unceasing waves

article_image
By Dr. Prasanna Cooray

The career sailor, Member of Parliament, Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera fought the war with a purpose. Even at a time when the political authorities of the country were at sea with regard to their stance on war, SW, the officer and the gentleman, was well grounded. Weerasekera’s enemy was the LTTE terrorists and the Tamil people were his brethren. He always uttered this to the men under his command and proved his words by deeds. This I knew as his subordinate in the Navy. I still remember his very first assignment for me as a young Surgeon Lieutenant attached to the Elara naval base in Karainagar in late 1993 to move out from the base and to go to the people living in the islands on the outskirts of the Jaffna peninsula. That was very much a troubled time and travel (by a dinghy) was neither easy nor safe. Yet, soon, for a young doctor it turned out to be an immensely memorable adventure. First, he had to carry out the command of the boss. Secondly, it came with a lot of empathy and affection to the Tamil civilians who were caught in a brutal war, for a fault that was not theirs.

‘Gamani’ is Weerasekera’s first film. But it speaks volumes for his accomplishment as a master film maker. His selection of shots and scenes throughout the film keep the audience spellbound. The film revolves around a remote village called Gonagala, in the Ampara district. Through each frame he has mingled to perfection the serenity of an otherwise calm far-flung village with the uncertainty and fear that terrorism brought to the lives of its inhabitants. Opening with a scene of the brutal massacre of innocent civilians by the LTTE terrorists, the plot winds round the villagers’ collective struggle for life and their attempts at resisting such future attacks.

For Weerasekera, who was appointed chief of the Civil Defense Force after his retirement from the Navy, this was a case of sharing his personal experiences and challenges. Equal to the task of transforming the CDF from a bunch of ‘gambattas’ to a force to reckon with that went on to play a crucial role in eliminating brutal terrorism from the country, Weerasekera has captured his personal experience in celluloid to the highest standard of artistry. Perhaps, one may find it difficult to resist reminiscence of 1982 multi award winner ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ encountering similar scenes pertaining to military training. And what director Taylor Hackford accomplished for Hollywood, Weerasekera has done to perfection for the benefit of Sri Lankan film-goers.

In the quest to defeating terrorists physically, Weerasekera deploys two strategies. One is to vitalize the CDF through proper training. The other is to use the ancient Sri Lankan martial art tradition of ‘angam pora’ to attack the enemy when and where possible. Although one can raise a credibility issue with regard to the effectiveness of ‘angam pora’ in confronting the enemy in this era of sophisticated weaponry, I think yet the decision lies very much within the discretion of the director. Whatever it is, the viewer is treated to a breathtaking feast of ‘angam pora’.

The Guantanamo Files

The Guantanamo Files:

In its latest release of classified US documents, WikiLeaks is shining the light of truth on a notorious icon of the Bush administration’s "War on Terror" — the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, which opened on January 11, 2002, and remains open under President Obama, despite his promise to close the much-criticized facility within a year of taking office.

In thousands of pages of documents dating from 2002 to 2008 and never seen before by members of the public or the media, the cases of the majority of the prisoners held at Guantánamo — 765 out of 779 in total — are described in detail in memoranda from JTF-GTMO, the Joint Task Force at Guantánamo Bay, to US Southern Command in Miami, Florida.

These memoranda, known as Detainee Assessment Briefs (DABs), contain JTF-GTMO’s recommendations about whether the prisoners in question should continue to be held, or should be released (transferred to their home governments, or to other governments). They consist of a wealth of important and previously undisclosed information, including health assessments, for example, and, in the cases of the majority of the 172 prisoners who are still held, photos (mostly for the first time ever).

They also include information on the first 201 prisoners released from the prison, between 2002 and 2004, which, unlike information on the rest of the prisoners (summaries of evidence and tribunal transcripts, released as the result of a lawsuit filed by media groups in 2006), has never been made public before. Most of these documents reveal accounts of incompetence familiar to those who have studied Guantánamo closely, with innocent men detained by mistake (or because the US was offering substantial bounties to its allies for al-Qaeda or Taliban suspects), and numerous insignificant Taliban conscripts from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Magodiya: Cancer Free Life

Magodiya: Cancer Free Life:

Cancers have been one of top most killers of the world. Cancer statistics show various horror films with nightmares. Some groups seem to leave no stone unturned to help the victims developing huge funds withlucrative job openings. Drug manufacturers are also show their colors in different ways making good profits out of that.

Whatever the movement of the society, there is a sour truth in that. Cancers are spreading at an increasing momentum. What we believe is that the dire truth of cancers is the result of what we did and what we do. You can’t change what you have done so far. But you should be ready for reducing the probability of the cancer occurrences in you.

Basically the life style gives these repercussions. Without changing the life style to a better way, you will not safeguard yourself. What is this better way of living?

Live with nature! Be moderate in all possible things in your life.

Live with nature means, identify what sort of products you consume. Breathing, Foods, drinks, cosmetics, textiles, paints on homes, roofs and many more you should consider. Specially your mental condition should be at peace. Certain things you can’t change as you wish. But you should know one thing.

The nature has given us a place to live with certain environmental factors. Unfortunately man has destroyed the natural systems. But still we should have a place we are born to (actually place where we were raised). Search natural products in the same environmental system that can be used for your life. If you go farer from your habitat, there you will have increased chances of gettingdiseases. Simple moderate life styles will pave the way for a better death than long term sufferings.

We’ll next discuss on meditations and good life styles with examples…….

Animal sacrifice & welfare

Animal sacrifice & welfare

Animal Sacrifice & welfare

What do you feel when you read the topic of this article? Extremes of one subject?

Animal (and human) sacrifices for gods have still being a special ritual of certain religions and beliefs. For developed nations, this is not that much common. However some fundamentalists of certain religions still perform & promote those extreme rituals. So some devotees raise some animals for sacrifice while some purchase animals for sacrifice. Their intention is to satisfy their gods at their best level. They have hardly any intention to hurt animals. Some of them are real vegetarians. So this is religious, cultural and not for pleasure.

animal slaughter as the sacrifice in Sri Lanka

Animal welfare groups are spawning around the world these days. And it has been a new fashion of some level of societies. They raise funds and have certain conferences in cool rooms with beautiful pictures of animals. They spread the message that CERTAIN animals should be given freedom to live in peace in the same environment as we human beings live in. That is good but what about the Zoo? They have delicious (as per them) meals with meat stuff like Chicken, mutton, beef, pork and fish. (Rarely do we find some people really want to share the environment with animals.)So this is done for pleasure basically.

Tata Nano car caught fire - Caution

“Please circulate, don’t risk you life to save a few bucks”

This car was recalled due to a  “manufacturing defect”  few year ago
The issue is still not sorted out ?????

a few mins after Prasadhi stepped out of the Nano cab, it blew up right outside our Mackinonns building office.  Fire starting from the back where the tank is.

This vehicle was apparently recalled a few years back due to this same reason, looks like the issue wasn't sorted out.

Dear All,

Today morning I took a budget taxi (a Tata Nano) and came to work. After I got down from the cab it couldn't  even go 100m, it caught on fire.
Luckily the driver was able to jump out of the car but if I was seated behind I wouldn't have escaped.

Please pass the massage and tell your loved ones not to use these cabs as some parties are already trying to cover the story..
See the pictures below.

Swarm troopers: Mutant armies waging war in the wild - life - 12 September 2011 - New Scientist

Mutant armies waging war in the wild - life
soldiers are the first of a new kind of creature - "autocidal" maniacs genetically modified to wipe out their own kind without harming other creatures. The first animals being targeted with these "living pesticides" are disease-carrying mosquitoes and crop-munching caterpillars, but the approach should work with just about any animal - from invasive fish and frogs to rats and rabbits. If it is successful, it could transform the way we think about genetically engineered animals.

Cancer Treatment from Manihot Esculenta

Amazing Building

[]
Have you ever seen a building in motion that actually changes its shape?

This building will never appear exactly the same twice.  It is amazing
but you will have the choice of waking up to sunrise in your bedroom
and enjoying sunsets over the ocean at dinner.  In addition to being

such an incredible engineering miracle it will produce energy for itself

and even for o the r buildings because it will have wind turbines fitted

between each rotating floor (picture 2). So an 80-story building will

have up to 79 wind turbines, making it a true green power plant.

The Divine Retribution

Take a very close look at these two pictures. The one on the left is the island
of Utoya in Norway, where over 60 Norwegians were killed by a gunman,  a terrorist.

The second is the island (country) of Sri Lanka where the Government of Norway
unsuccessfully aided and abetted the terrorist group called the LTTE
(regarded by the FBI as one of the worst in the world) attempting to
undermine the Government of Sri Lanka.

Uncanny resemblance  --  Well, well, well!!!!
